The name of my country is Bangladesh. It is a land of beauty. It is a small country situated in the South East Asia. It is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal in the south and borders on India and Mayanmar in the east, and only India in the west. Its total land area including rivers is 147,570 square kilometers. It has a significant place in the world for its glorious history and culture.
The history of Bangladesh dates back when the British East India Company defeated the last independent Nawab of Bengal, Nawab Siraj-ud-dowla. Since the fall of Nawab Siraj-ud-dowla the British had been ruling this country for a period of two hundred years. In 1947 the British rule ended and Pakistan came into veing comprising two wings west and East Pakistan.
East Pakistan our present Bangladesh, became a colony of west Pakistan and the rulers of west Pakistan ruled our country with an oppressed hand. Then in 1971 through a long battle of nine months we achieved our freedom. About thirty lakhs people sacrifice their lives in the battle. Today we remember them with respect. It is one of the most beautiful countries of the world, with its green fields and lots of trees and plants.
Bangladesh is a land of over population. More than 14 crore people live here. Here the density of population is very high. About 800 people live per square kilometer. Bangladesh is mainly an agricultural country and most of its people are farmers. Most of them are Muslims. The others are Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. People of all communities live here with peace and amity.
In Bangladesh we have sixty four district towns and 460 Thaana towns. We have six divisional cities. Dhaka is the capital of our country. The state language of the country is Bangle. Only a few tribes of Bandarban, Khagrachari, Rahgamati speak in their tribal language. But there is wide practice of English, Arabic and Urdu. English is our second language.
The national dress for men is payjama and panjabi and for women, sari. But the educated people wear trousers and shirts and young women Salwar and Kamiz. Most people wear lungi and shirt. Bangladesh is a mainly an agricultural country. Most of the people are farmers. Farming is their main occupation. Some are service holders, businessmen, doctors, engineers, fishermen, weavers, carpenters etc. others are day labourers. Rice, Wheat, Oil-seed, sugarcane, vegetables, various kinds of fruits are food products of Bangladesh. The land of Bangladesh is very fertile. Barious kinds of crops and fruits are grown here. Rice is our staple food, Jute, tea, tobacco are our main cash crops. Jute is the golden Fibre of the country. The hilly slopes Sylhet and Chittagong produce tea and many others crops like tobacco, sugarcane, cotton, oil-seeds etc. mangoes, Jack-fruits, Pine-apples, Papaws, coconuts, Oranges, Plams, Guavas, Bananas are very delicious and nutritious fruits of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is known as the darling child of nature. There are many interesting places with scenic beauty here. Numerous trees of different sizes have enhanced the beauty to a great extent. Flowers are the special gifts of nature. They have added beauty to the country offering their varied colour, sweet smell and excellent charm. The Sundarbans, Rangamati and the tea gardens of Sylhet are very attractive. The cox’s Bazar sea beach with its green background looks very charming. Bangladesh is called the land of rivers. In Bangladesh we have about 320 rivers. The Padma, the Jamuna, the Meghna, Karnafully and the Brahmaputra are big rivers. The beautiful cornfields of Bangladesh are the gifts of her rivers. The rivers bring enough silt and make her soil fertile.
There are six seasons in our country. They are Summer, Rainy season, Autumn, Late Autumn, Winter and Spring. Every year natural calamities like flood, cyclone, draught etc. visit this country. Its climate is hot and humid. Though Bangladesh is an uncommonly beautiful country, most of its people live below the poverty line. They work very hard, yet they do not have enough to eat. The reason is that we are too many people for this small land. However, our government has started a campaign for poverty. Alleviation and some pragmatic steps have been taken in this respect. We hope that our country will be free from hunger and poverty by the early part of 21st century.
